The Keys of Those Chosen

The Keys of Those Chosen

Shiri Shisgal

Prologue

I hear my mother’s screams in the background, the security guards trying to subdue her. I hear the fast beeping of the monitor in my grandmother’s hospital room, it slowly changes to a long beep as my grandmother flatlines. But I sit just outside the room, staring at the key in hand, so many questions bubbling inside my head. What does it open? Where does it come from? The key was the last gift from my grandmother. Her last words bouncing around in my skull, I hear them over and over again. “You are the chosen one” she said. The chosen one? What does that mean? Why did this happen? Why me? Why now? When will I wake up from this dream? I have heard the legend so many times but some things still didn’t add up. One thing’s for sure, I don’t know when this ends or why this happened, but I do know, this story is just beginning.
